Rear Admiral (Ret.) Nicholas T. Kalathas


Rear Admiral (Ret.) Nicholas T. KalathasRear Adm. Kalathas reported to Defense Procurement and Acquisition Policy in April 2012 after completing a one-year deployment as commander, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM)-Joint Theater Support Contracting Command (C-JTSCC), Doha, Qatar. As deputy director for Contingency Contracting, he was responsible for DoD contract policy issues affecting deployed forces, humanitarian and peacekeeping operations, and disaster relief. Prior flag officer assignments include: deputy program manager, Operational Contract Support under Deputy, Assistant Secretary of Defense (Program Support); and, assistant deputy commander for Logistics at Naval Sea Systems Command.

He is a native of Baltimore, and graduated from American University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1980. He completed his Master of Education degree at Loyola College in 1996. Kalathas received a direct commission in the U.S. Navy Reserve through the Navy Supply Corps in 1983. He graduated from the Navy Supply Corps School Basic Qualification Course (I) in Athens, Ga., in 1986 as a member of 10th Company.

Kalathas was a member of the Navy’s Acquisition Professional Community holding numerous positions within the acquisition workforce throughout his career. In addition to being a former contracting officer with Defense Logistics Agency, he worked nearly 20 years in industry on major weapon systems acquisitions before starting a consulting practice in 2004. Primarily serving in the Reserve component over his Navy career, he has completed six command tours, including joint tours with Military Traffic Management Command; Defense Logistics Agency, Defense Contract Management Agency, and most recently with CENTCOM. He is certified to Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act Level III in Contracting, and has flag oversight for the Supply Corps Direct Commission Officer program. Kalathas also serves as flag officer mentor to Navy Operational Support Centers (NOSCs) in Green Bay, Wisc.; Spokane, Wash.; and Billings, Mont.

He has been awarded the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (3), Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (5), Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He mobilized under Operation Enduring Freedom from 2001 to 2003 to Defense Supply Center Philadelphia.
